The Roxbury Arts Group is pleased to announce A/Symmetrical Worlds, a two-person exhibition at the Headwaters Art Center showcasing recent works by Helen Quinn and Carol Levine. Featuring over twenty artworks—including medium size works on paper by both artists, and clay sculptures by Helen Quinn—the exhibition explores the dynamic interplay between symmetry and asymmetry in their practices. It highlights how each artist manipulates color, line, and shape—bending, repeating, and distorting each one—to create imaginary worlds that pulse with life.

Quinn’s work on view draws from her ongoing exploration of heraldry in the Anglo-Saxon, Japanese, and Indian traditions. Heraldry, as a visual language, serves to identify, protect, and communicate meaning through shapes and symbols rather than words. Similarly, the shields in Quinn’s works are meant as protection for particular people. She forms their portraits by assembling abstract shapes, patterns, and objects imbued with symbolic significance.

Visually, the artist balances harmony with dynamic disarray. Fan-like shapes, stripes, ribbons, and garlands swirl and twirl, accompanied by black dots and strings of pearls—both references to battle scenes in Indian Miniature painting. In Quinn’s work, symmetry serves as the foundation, while asymmetry injects it with life—each element as indispensable as the other.

Helen Quinn has exhibited in diverse venues from Norway to the Czech Republic to Queens. She is the recipient of two New Works Grants from the Queens Council of the Arts in 2020 and 2022. She has attended numerous residencies including a year-long program in Japan with the Henry Luce Foundation and more recently at Poco a Poco in Oaxaca, Mexico where she did a series of silkscreen crowd portraits.
